In the country where the healthcare system has collapsed, people in the rural Democratic Republic of Congo have very little chance of survival if faced with health challenges. Therefore, our plan in the next three to five years is to plan the most realistic response in the face of this reality. Priority will be placed on prevention, because hospitals that provide a minimum health care are far removed from the majority of the population in need of healthcare. We have supported the construction of a healthcare center in the Dibaya territory. We will make sure the center is able to attend to the minor needs of the people in their catchment area as we explore the best way for serious cases to reach hospitals.
Nurses Lights of the World: It is not an exaggeration to say that over 90% of those who visit or wish to visit a health center or hospital will not get the needed care because they simply cannot pay medical care costs. As we monitor the government’s commitment to create schools and health centers in each of the 145 territories, our role will also be to join hands with the government for better coverage. We have identified a network of nurses and medical doctors in the US who are ready to use their vacation and volunteer hours of services in our rural hospitals and health centers.
The lack of cash in the rural area calls for research to find the best way to establish some kind of health insurance that would allow families to pay or prepay using their agricultural produce. In the Kasai, families will be encouraged to use the proceeds from the sale of their excess crops to improve their habitats and protect their families from harsh weather that affects their health. Considering the high cost for water bore holes, efforts will be made to improve water sources for potable water and prevention against water borne diseases. Funds will also be raised for the procurement of grain mills that will allow mothers to save time they spend pounding corn and cassava in order to take care of their hygiene and children.
